Language Arts Last week we finished our guided reading books. This week we did an in class project on the books. Students were able to choose to write a play, a comic strip, create a board game, write a book review, create a newspaper, create a brochure, a newscast, or a mobile to demonstrate their knowledge. of the text via a different medium. Next week, we will start our new books. Students will receive their usually calendar so they have a clear understanding of what they need to read each day. They are the last ones connected to this theme. We will also continue to work on our read aloud Call It Courage. We will continue to use it as a tool to analyze theme, characters, and develop other reading skills. This week we did not have a new vocabulary list, as I did not want students to have to study over Thanksgiving break. We will continue our usual vocabulary assessment routine next Monday. We are specially focusing on prefixes, Greek and Latin root words, as they will help students learn/figure out other vocabulary words they might not know. We will also continue to focus on learning other vocabulary words and using context clues to figure out a word's meaning. This will help them improve their reading comprehension.) Math Last week we focused on conversions of measurements, multiplication, and word problems. We also started focusing on division. This week we had limited math time. We focused on reviewing of old concepts. (Please note it is imperative that we review "old" concepts in class and at home, as math is cyclical. Students should be doing so via IXL, any review sheet/packets I provide, other online sources (Khan Academy, etc.), and their own resources. Next week we will learn to divide by 10 patterns for multi-digit whole number division. We will also learn to use basic facts to approximate quotients with two-digit divisors and to divide two- and three-digit dividends by multiples of 10 with single-digit quotients, and make connections to a written method. We will also work work on how to divide two- and three-digit dividends by two-digit divisors with single-digit quotients, and make connections to a written method. Social Studies/Science In social studies, we are working on technological advances. We have focused on some of the most "important" ones throughout the years, and how they have impacted society as a result. We are also working on understanding/learning about new advances. The intention is to better understand how society (from jobs to how we interact) have changed as a result, and to realize that technology has both positive and negative impacts-whether that is their intent or not. We will continue to work on this next week. In science, we are working on the Earth's Systems. Students have learned about the different spheres (litosphere, geosphere, hydrosphere, atmosphere, and biosphere.) In addition, students are working in small groups to dive deeper into each sphere. They have to include important information about the sphere. For example, they must create a visual representation of the spheres. They must also share, among other things, a description of it, its importance, how it interacts with other spheres, the importance of it in their/our lives. etc. We will continue this work next week. If you made it through my email the day break starts, I salute you. Once again, I hope you have a wonderful holiday break. Hope you get plenty of sleep and quality time with loved ones. Best, Veronica Martinez |
